Bad breath is an embarrassing condition that leaves its victim uncomfortable and with low self esteem. Some use products like mints, gum etc but that only give a temporary solution and don’t resolve the main cause of the problem. Some foods, health conditions, habits and drugs are among the causes of bad breath.
Some don’t worry much about their breath and some don’t notice their bad breath, but it is a advisable to be always conscious about our breath in order to avoid shame among our peers and in public and also to get it diagnosed in case it might be symptom of a health problem.
WHAT CAUSES MOUTH ODOR?
Most of the causes of mouth odor usually starts from the mouth, some of the possible causes are outlined below:
1) FOOD: Digestion of the food we eat starts from the mouth, and the particles around our teeth can increase the bacteria and cause a foul odor. Eating spice food such as onions, garlic can also cause foul odor in the mouth and affect our breath
2) SMOKING AND ALCOHOL: Tobacco products and alcohol it self has its own
unpleasant odor, and smokers also have high risk of having gum disease, which is another source of bad breath.
3) DRY MOUTH: Saliva in the mouth helps to cleanse the mouth removing particles that causes mouth odor, a situation whereby by there is limited saliva in the mouth to help with the cleansing of the mouth might cause mouth odor. Dry mouth occurs naturally during sleep thereby leading to “morning breath” in the morning when you wake up. Chronic dry mouth might occur when there is problem with the salivary glands and some diseases.
4) Poor dental hygiene: When you don’t brush regularly or take care of the mouth regularly, food particles remain in your mouth and a colourless, sticky form of bacteria forms on your teeth. If its not brushed away, the bacteria can irritate your gums and might eventually form bacteria filled pockets between your teeth and your gums, thereby accommodating odor causing bacteria and food particles.
5) INFECTIONS IN THE MOUTH: Some of the sugary things we eat such as chocolate, candy, and mints get stuck in the teeth unknowingly, if those substances stay for long in the mouth, they invite bacteria and those bacterial multiply over and over thereby causing tooth decay. Bad breath can also be caused by surgical wounds after oral surgery as a result of tooth decay.
6) MEDICATIONS: The use of some drugs can indirectly produce bad breath by contributing to dry mouth. Some also contribute to bad breath when their chemicals are broken down and carried by the breath.
Other causes includes diseases and conditions such as; metabolic disorders, chronic reflux of stomach acids can also be associated with bad breath.
If you have bad breath, try and keep a clean and healthy mouth hygiene like brushing your mouth and tongue with the use of a tongue scrapper after eating meals, using dental mouth wash and drinking a lot of water. Also avoid smoking and taking of alcohol. And check medications if there is an indication of mouth odor as a side effect.
If your mouth odor persists after making these changes, try and see your dentist.
