Stomach ulcers are sores in the lining of the stomach or the small intestine, they occur when the protective mucus that protects the stomach becomes ineffective. The stomach releases very strong acids in order to digest the food we eat properly and protect the stomach against micro organisms that are harmful.
To protect the stomach cells and tissues from these acids, the stomach also secretes a thick layer of mucus, and if the mucus is worn out or stops functioning effectively, thereby giving the acids access into the stomach tissues thereby causing stomach ulcer.
Stomach ulcers are easy to cure but they can cause problems if they not treated. It is commonly caused by bacteria and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Stomach ulcer is mainly caused either by:
. H. pylori bacteria
. Pain killers known as nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin
It is also caused by excess stomach acidity due to smoking, stress, genetics, and some foods
SYMPTOMS OF STOMACH ULCER:
Pain around the stomach or slightly above the stomach is the main symptom of stomach ulcer. In ability of the stomach to digest food properly is also a symptom of stomach ulcer. An ulcer also tends to produce a burning or dull pain in the stomach area.
Other symptoms includes:
1. Weight loss
2. Nausea and vomiting
3. In ability to eat because of the pain
4. Heart burns
5. Bloating
Symptoms often subside quickly after treatment. However the treatment should be continued, especially if the ulcer is due to H. pylori infection. It is very important to avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating any trigger food during treatment.
It is very important to see the doctor when seeing symptoms of having stomach ulcer. Any stomach symptoms that last more than a few days or keep happening needs evaluation and treatment. It is also severe when blood is noticed in vomit and if stools are black and sticky or if blood is found in them, in such cases, immediate medical attention is needed.
